Na Nicolaas' dood werd hij volgens de overlevering in een marmeren graf in Myra gelegd. Uit het graf begon een heldere, geurige vloeistof te komen, in verschillende talen aangeduid als olie, myron of manna. Pelgrims verzamelden die vloeistof en schreven er genezingen aan toe. De Gouden Legende vertelt bovendien dat de stroom ophield toen een onrechtmatig verdreven bisschop uit zijn ambt was gezet en terugkeerde toen hij werd hersteld. De reliekencultus verbond zo lichamelijke nabijheid, rechtmatig kerkbestuur en genezing.

**BRONKRITISCHE NOTITIE**   
In Bari wordt nog altijd een heldere vloeistof uit de graftombe verzameld en als 'manna di San Nicola' vereerd. De religieuze duiding als wonder moet worden onderscheiden van historische of natuurwetenschappelijke uitspraken over de herkomst ervan.
